Folk Art Fairies

I know you must have already heard about the new magazine Prims by Somerset. I have read every article and have just poured over every picture. I think so much of what is going on in the art and craft world today is folk art. I just wonder why the word is not being used more. It would sure make things easier when it came time to list an item for sale or even to buy. There are way to many categories out there. I think even art dolls are folk art for the most part and then they could be divided up into categories from there. I bet there would be more selling going on if the buyers knew they were purchasing folk art. I know there are many who would differ with my opinion, but it's a thought and I have many!LOL
I have been in the studio making little folk art fairies. I have eight of them in the works. They are teeny tiny, seven inches to be exact and they are made of polymer clay. Their little face is about the size of a quarter. A challenge to paint, but so much fun! This little gal is headed to my store, but I just can't think of a name for her. Any ideas?

If you have not seen the magazine, just click here and it will take you to a sneak peek at a few of the pages.

  1. How about "Octavia Delight". She is delightful. Bet you work your rear end off trying to keep up with the demand. Hugs, Mollye

  2. Oh my goodness!!! She is just beautiful. How about the name Evangeline? I think it suits her very much. :) I purchased the Prims magazine and was enthralled by it. :) I had not heard of the term before, although I am a fan of folk art. I think it more people did associate the term, it might indeed give more exposure to the art. Again, this little lady is just lovely!!! Theresa

  5. I think her name should be Laila. In faery, it means "An angel appointed to guard the spirits at their Birth". She looked quite like an angel with her white wings and crown! She is amazing!

  9. Thanks for the heads up on the magazine...I agree with you in regards to dolls, and dollmakers..we are folk artists...I think in years to come our work will be viewed that way...this from wikipedia..."Folk art expresses cultural identity by conveying shared community values and aesthetics. It encompasses a range of utilitarian and decorative media, including cloth, wood, paper, clay, metal and more. If traditional materials are inaccessible, new materials are often substituted, resulting in contemporary expressions of traditional folk art forms. Folk art reflects traditional art forms of diverse community groups — ethnic, tribal, religious, occupational, geographical, age- or gender-based — who identify with each other and society at large. Folk artists traditionally learn skills and techniques through apprenticeships in informal community settings, though they may also be formally educated."
    thanks for sharing...hug, hug

  11. Oh she is so beautiful! She should be in the new magazine! I tend to agree with you about the term Folk Art. I think sometimes Prim creates a particular picture for people and they think...oh I'm not into Prim. But Folk Art opens up a different way of thinking.

  12. Hmmm, she looks like a Penelope to me. Quite lovely. Not meaning to be a wet blanket, but after several years of subscriptions to some of the Stampington magazines, they all started to look the same. I like some folk art, especially if it doesn't seem contrived. I really love the prim dolls that are aged and look ratty and dirty. People don't realize how much work goes into art, that when we aren't creating physically, we are thinking of the next design, or how to execute a certain technique. It's a labor of love for sure. Take care and enjoy the weekend!

  13. Kim, I think she is wonderful and love how you have painted the face....very 'folk art'. As always you have also captured so many lovely details in her costume.

I have looked for the Prims book here in Ontario and have not been able to find it. I plan on ordering it.

I agree with you totally on the "Folk Art" designation. Unfortunately in my little corner of the world, folk art still means 80s
dusty blue/rose geese and hearts to many.

    Hugs,

    Sue
